Deadline to receive applications for the next Armed Forces Banner installation is Wednesday, August 15th. Banners will be installed on September 11, 2012. GOAL OF PROGRAM: Recognize and honor active duty military personnel that reside or have an immediate family member that resides in the City of Hemet. Encourage community pride.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Serviceperson must be serving on active duty, defined as 12 months of continuous service. Serviceperson must be resident , or the spouse, mother, father, daughter, son, brother, sister, grandson or granddaughter of a current City of Hemet resident. Priority will first be given to Hemet residents. Annual eligibility verification will be required.
WHERE AND WHEN BANNERS ARE TO BE DISPLAYED: Will be displayed continuously (with exception of the hanging of Ramona Pageant, Holiday Banners or American flags). Banners to be displayed along Florida Avenue; currently there are 63 locations available. First group of banners to be installed prior to Armed Forces Day (May 19th) Suggested date to be May 15th. Will invite Councilmembers, City staff, families of military honorees, military personnel and press.
PROCESS: Applications will be received on an ongoing basis. For first round of banner installations, applications accepted through April 30th. City staff and American Legion Post 53 will review applications to ensure eligibility. In an effort to keep installation costs down, banners will be installed twice per year, anticipated to be May and September. Removed banners will be returned to the applicant. In the event serviceperson is killed in the line of duty, banner will be removed and given to applicant and the name of honoree will be added to Veterans Memorial at Gibbel Park.
