Traffic Collision Kills Pedestrian Walking in Roadway
On Friday, August 22nd, 2014 at about 9:40 PM, Hemet Police Department Communication Center received a report of a traffic collision, which occurred in the 600 block of south Sanderson Avenue, in the City of Hemet. Officers arrived on scene and discovered a pedestrian deceased in the middle of the roadway, and a distraught driver pulled to the side of the road.
Department traffic investigators were called to the scene to take over the investigation. Investigators learned a 36-year-old Hemet man, whose identity is being withheld pending family notification, was walking in the roadway on Sanderson Avenue between Acacia Avenue and Wentworth Drive.
For unknown reasons, the man was walking in the roadway rather than the wide dirt shoulder on the east side of Sanderson Avenue. A Chrysler 300 was traveling north on Sanderson Avenue at about 35 to 45 miles per hour when the driver reported seeing a “Flash of white” just prior to colliding into the pedestrian. The pedestrian was wearing a white t-shirt when he was struck.
After the collision, the driver immediately pulled to the side of the road and called 911. DUI is not suspected in this collision. Sanderson Avenue was closed for approximately three hours, and the roadway was re-opened at about 1:00 AM.
