On 06/02/2013 at approximately 7:30am, Hemet Police Officers Matthew Hiatt and Derick Spoelstra were dispatched to the 300 block of N. Western Avenue in reference to a possible domestic violence incident. The 911 caller advised dispatchers that a male subject in a Dodge Charger was hitting a female on Western Avenue.
As officers pulled onto the street, they saw a grey Dodge Charger take off at a high rate of speed northbound Western Avenue to eastbound Rosalia Avenue. The driver was also running stop signs.
Officer Hiatt initiated a pursuit which traveled throughout central Hemet at max speeds of about 70 mph. The vehicle slowed down in the 200 block of N. Tahquitz Street and the driver jumped out of the vehicle. With officers behind him, the suspect ran east through some nearby apartments. The unoccupied vehicle continued on Tahquitz and collided into a parked vehicle, parked in the area.
Felipe Vega, 36 years old, was located hiding in one of the apartments. After a brief struggle, Vega was apprehended after resisting officers. A records check confirmed that Vega had an outstanding felony warrant for drug charges. Vega was later transported to Riverside County Jail on the felony warrant, hit and run, felony evading, and resisting arrest.
No other injuries were reported.
