Hemet Police and Mt. San Jacinto College Form Community Partnership

Chief Dave Brown and MSJC President Roger Schultz have collaborated to form an internship for criminal justice students to learn the many facets of law enforcement at Hemet PD. The internship is a semester class requiring students to work 180 hours of volunteer service. The students who complete the internship will receive three units of college credit.

Hemet PD will be hosting two interns during the fall 2012 semester. The students completed an application process that included an interview with police employees. As part of the Administration of Justice Internship Program the students will be required to attend the Hemet Police Volunteer Academy that begins September 19th. Chief Dave Brown states, “We are always looking to collaborate with our community partners and we are especially pleased to work with the college. This will benefit the students, the college and the police department.”

The students will learn about everything from clerical work to how officers handle calls in the field. The internship will provide the students with a base knowledge of how a police department functions. The program is supervised by Richard Legarra, Administration of Justice and Corrections Department Head. Hemet P.D. Capt. Rob Webb said, “This is a great way for the students to gauge if a law enforcement career is for them. We look forward to growing the program in the future.”
